Japanese 1875 - 1964
Born in Kochi City, present-day Kochi Prefecture. In 1891 (Meiji 24), he moved to Tokyo and joined Koyama Shotaros Fuzosha. As Koyamas assistant, he painted panoramas of the Sino-Japanese War. In 1893, he was selected for the first time for the 5th Meiji Bijutsu-kai exhibition. On the dissolution of the Meiji Bijutsu-kai in 1901, he founded the Pacific Painting Society together with Hiroshi Yoshida and Kokushiro Mitsuya. Went to Europe in 1902. Returned to Japan in 1904. Exhibited at the Bunten Exhibition from the first edition in 1907. In 1914, he won the second prize at the Bunten Exhibition (the second prize was the highest award). In 1917, he was not included in the Bunten exhibition. In 1943, he became headmaster of the Pacific Art School. After the war, he left the Pacific Art Association and founded the Jigenkai in 1947. Notable achievements include his involvement in art education. He became a drawing lecturer at Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1918 and at Tokyo University of Education in 1949, while also editing textbooks and being involved in the Teachers Certification Committee. For this, he was awarded the Imperial Prize of the Japan Art Academy Award in 1953.
His representative works include The Wild Duck (1893, 5th Meiji Bijutsu-kai Exhibition) and Afternoon at the Harbour (1913, Second Prize at the Bunten Exhibition). In his early years, he preferred to paint women, but gradually began to paint landscapes with bright colours in the manner of the Impressionists.
