Born in 1904 in Ohara-mura, Katagi-gun, Ibaraki Prefecture (now Oga, Shiodome City), he was a watercolourist. He was one of the founding members of the Watercolour Federation. From his first public exhibition until his death, he painted entirely in watercolour, and over the years he helped to raise the status and development of watercolour painting, as well as depicting the landscapes, mountains, skies, oceans and vast spaces of his home village of Mizutaki in his own unique style. While perfecting his expressive techniques, he also added a profound insight into the realm of internal depiction, establishing a new style of painting that can be described as typical of Showa watercolours, depicting clouds, sky, water, vegetation, floating islands on the opposite shore and the distant Chikubo Mountains in a myriad of colours and shapes while expressing spiritual images, which have widely influenced future generations. He had a wide influence on young artists.
